It is with sadness that the Bay of Plenty branch of NZGS advise of the passing of Steve Raynor after a short battle with cancer. Steve was a past chair of the local Engineering NZ committee and worked with Tauranga City Council (TCC) as their resilience specialist from 2018-2021. It was during this period of time that the local geotechnical community worked closely with Steve to map natural hazard risks to Tauranga and develop a detailed understanding of the resilience of TCC infrastructure in light of those risks. Based on this work, Steve was in the process of completing his PhD at the University of Waikato on Resilience Planning in Emerging Coastal Cities Through Multi-Hazard Mapping. Steve attended and supported local Bay of Plenty NZGS events bringing his enthusiasm for geology and discussions of his adventures in fossil, rock and geode hunting to many conversations. Steve’s impact on local Tauranga resilience and similar projects he was involved with throughout the country will benefit us all for many years to come.
