Scott had an extraordinary career fuelled by his passion for challenging engineering projects. Growing up in Nelson and graduating from the University of Canterbury in 2005, Scott first worked on multiple large civil and geotechnical projects across New Zealand and Australia. Scott then pursued his interest in dam engineering by undertaking a Master of Engineering in Hydropower Development at the Norwegian University of Science. In 2013 Scott joined Multiconsult, a Norwegian dams specialist consultancy where he contributed to major international engineering projects, such as the Central West Pumo Hydroelectric Scheme in Australia, the 166 metre high Moglicë Dam in Albania, the Neelum Jhelum hydroelectric project in Pakistan, and the Alto Maipo HEP in Chile.
Scott’s international experience set him apart in the consulting industry and on return to New Zealand in 2019, Scott joined Golder Associates in Christchurch and later moved to GHD in early 2022. During his time at GHD, Scott became a Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng) (Practice Fields: Civil and Geotechnical), an International Professional Engineer (IntPE), and was working towards becoming a Recognised Engineer for dam safety with Engineering NZ. Scott also achieved significant milestones, including becoming a New Zealand Society on Large Dams (NZSOLD) Management Committee member and joining the review panel for the Clyde Dam landslides for Contact Energy.
Scott’s career highlights include the CCC Ocean Outfall Pump Station Embankments, Ramu 2 Dam (PNG), Airport Link Motorway tunnels (Queensland), Northern Gateway Tunnels (Waka Kotahi), Reefton Hydro Project, Hunter Downs Irrigation, #1 North Dam (Stockton), Amethyst Hydropower, Waitaha Hydropower, Tekapo Canal upgrade project, Alto Maipo underground hydropower works (Chile), Neelum Jhelum hydropower tunnels (Pakistan), Stockton Mine A18 Tailings Dam, NZ Battery Project (Lake Onslow), Collie PHES, and most recently Stratford PHES and Arnold Dam.
Outside of work, Scott was an incredibly talented sportsperson and recently came 2nd in the Corporate Team category (Team GHD) in the famous Coast to Coast multisport race. Scott will always be recognised by all who worked with him for his humble nature and innate capability, whether dealing with complex technical engineering matters or engaging in his beloved sporting activities.
Tragically, Scott passed away shortly after a cancer diagnosis. He will be remembered for his pragmatic nature, love of the outdoors, infectious positive attitude, and his massive smile. Though Scott may no longer be with us, his impact and contributions to our profession will resonate within our industry for decades to come.
